SSANU & NASU embarked on a Nationwide strike at 12 midnight, on Friday 5th of February,2021.
The joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff union of University, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University (SSANU) and Non Academic staff union of University (NASU) are demanding the following from the Federal Government:
- Rectification of inconsistencies in the Intergrated Payroll, personnel information system(IPPIS)
- Non Payment of arrears of Minimum wage
- NASU and SSANU 2009 Agreement.
Amongst others
The President, Students Union Government (SUG) University of Benin. Comr Egwu Benjamin Lotanna, told the news Agency that the strike is of great consequences on the students.
Taking University of Benin for instance, the effects of the ongoing Strike include;
- The shut down of the Library Facilities - The students are not having access to make use of the school library.
The library is a place where majority of the students find convient and comfortable to read.
Following the strike action, the non-teaching staff of the University are major key Officers of the library.
- The medical Health centre: This is another important place in the University community, the SSANU & NASU strike is affecting the quality of services in the medical centre.
The students are finding it difficult to access the health facilities because the health Officers are not available to attend to their needs.
The School Hostel- The Porters in Halls of Residence are members of the said SSANU AND NASU who are currently on strike.
These Porters provide the students with Services like; Carrying Students luggages into the hostel, checking the activities of the students within the school hostel, maintain & manage other hostel Facilities like ensuring steady water & Electricity supply in the hostels.
The hostel cleaners are also Members of the SSANU & NASU
- The bursary Department ; All school charges/Payments are made through this Department, because of the strike, students are unable to make their payment at their convenience.
- The Administrative block, Exams and record centre, Students Affairs division, Security Department, etc.
In conclusion,
The SUG PRESIDENT, UNIBEN is appealing to the Government, on behalf of Nigerian Students, especially University of Benin Students who are preparing for their examination after a 9 months industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU)
In a conversation between the SUG PRESIDENT and the leadership of Joint Action Committee (JAC) UNIBEN Branch - Mr Osewa Brodrick (SSANU) and Mr. Anthony Igbinosa (NASU), they told the SUG PRESIDENT, that the strike is an indefinite strike and they will continue to monitor the compliance of their Members.
The SUG PRESIDENT UNIBEN, Comr Egwu Benjamin Lotanna has praised the amiable Vice Chancellor of University of Benin, Prof Lilian Salami. Who has been working tirelessly to ensure that the strike did not affect our students so badly, by Making sure there is constant Electricity & water supply in all Halls of Residence.
She went extra mile in hiring extra hands for security personnels within the campuses, Ekehuan & Ugbowo.
